Important Message

Jackson Department on Aging , Carnegie Library and The Arbor Church in Spring Arbor will be doing in person appointments, all other sites will be operating as a drop off site. Please follow the instructions that you receive in your confirmation email or text message about the location you choose.

For Drop off locations, please be prepared to drop off documents with a preparer and return for your completed return at another time. At the end of this process, once approved, we will e-file your tax return.

Although you are dropping off, please allow time to speak with a tax preparer or intake specialist. In addition, you must fill out the required paperwork completely.

All sites will have paperwork available to pick up prior to your appointment so that you will have time to fill it out ahead of time. There will be a container located at each site.

This program is for households who made up to $60,000. If you made less than $73,000 in 2023 you can self file for free at www.myfreetaxes.com

***If all required documentation is not completed at your scheduled appointment time, your appointment may have to be rescheduled for a later date.***

List of Common Docs Required

Failure to provide all required documentation will delay your assistance. We require the following documents:

  • Social Security card for yourself, spouse and any dependents. Copies are acceptable (cannot use prior year tax return).
  • State-issued photo identification (Driver License or State ID) for yourself and spouse (please bring your spouse with you). Must be valid and not expired.
  • All income forms including:
    • W2s
  • 1099s including:
    • SELF-EMPLOYMENT (1099-MISC)
    • SOCIAL SECURITY STATEMENT (BRING YOUR YEAR-END STATEMENT, NOT THE MONTHLY STATEMENT COPY - THAT ONLY TELLS YOUR CHECK AMOUNT). (1099-SSA)
    • UNEMPLOYMENT STATEMENT, ETC. (1099-G)
    • RETIREMENT INCOME (1099-R)
    • INTEREST INCOME (1099-INT)
  • All health insurance documents including form 1095 for everyone on your return.
  • DHHS Statement
  • Information on energy efficient purchases such as roof, solar panels, etc.
  • Total heating expense for 2023. May be a recent utility bill.
  • Total rent for 2023 and a list of all landlords' names and addresses.
  • Property tax statement showing 2023 taxable value and summer and winter taxes. (If you own your home)
  • Copy of last year's tax return, if available.
  • 6419 – Letter from the IRS on how much monies you received in 2023 for the Earned Income Tax Credit Advanced Payments
  • 6475 - Letter from the IRS indicating how much monies you received in 2023 for the Third Economic Impact Payment.
  • Form 1098T for college/university tuition
  • Student loan interest 1098-E
  • Receipts for textbooks and other supplies
  • Any documentation for itemized deductions (child care expenses, mortgage interest, donations, registration for your vehicle, etc.) or any other document you think may apply
  • Bank routing and account number for direct deposit. (Debit card will not work, they will not have routing or account numbers on them)
  • If self-employed, organized list of income and expense records.

WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PREPARE YOUR TAXES. YOU WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT AT ANOTHER TIME.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY VITA VOLUNTEERS DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE IRS OR MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF TREASURY TO CHECK ON YOU RETURN.

Please note that we cannot process returns involving farming.

Within minutes of making your appointment, you should receive a confirmation email with a calendar appointment attached to the email. In addition, you will also receive a phone reminder the day before your appointment.
